Beijing First Trip: A 3-Day City Itinerary and Booking Plan

Quick Answer

For a first visit, give Beijing three full city sightseeing days, plus a fourth day if you want the Great Wall without dropping another major sight. Keep arrival and departure outside those three days when possible.

Our suggested route uses one main area each day:

Book the Forbidden City first, then arrange Tiananmen if you want to enter the square. Reorder the days around your confirmed museum date and Monday closures. If you only have three days and the Wall is essential, replace Day 3 with Mutianyu rather than squeezing both into one day.

Choose Your Dates and Hotel Base

Count usable days, not hotel nights. A flight landing in the afternoon does not give you a full palace day. Keep that first evening for checking in, finding dinner, and testing your maps and payment setup.

For this route, our practical default is a hotel in central Dongcheng near a metro station, with Wangfujing as one area to compare. A hotel closer to Shichahai can suit travelers prioritizing evening walks. These are planning preferences, not a claim that every hotel in those neighborhoods is convenient: inspect the exact address, station walk, and luggage access before booking.

Avoid changing hotels for the Summer Palace day. Saving one outward transfer rarely justifies packing and checking in again on a short visit. Use the hotel booking guide for the booking checks, and save the hotel's Chinese address on your phone.

Booking Order: Separate the Palace from the Square

First, secure a Palace Museum date

The Forbidden City is visited as the Palace Museum, 故宫博物院. Its individual-booking instructions currently release tickets seven days before the visit at 20:00 Beijing time and say there are no same-day sales. Use its official ticket instructions, enter the passport details accurately, and keep the confirmation.

Choose the date before attaching other timed activities to it. The museum normally closes on Mondays except public holidays. If you cannot get your preferred date, move the city days around an available slot; do not build the trip on a promised walk-up exception.

Bring the original passport used for booking. Enter through Meridian Gate / 午门, the south entrance. Allow time for the approach and security before your booked entry period.

Then, arrange the square if you want to visit it

Tiananmen Square and the Palace Museum have different admission arrangements. The square is free, but the September 24, 2026 official notice tells individuals and groups to reserve 1–7 days ahead through the square's reservation platform. Follow your assigned date, time, and security entrance.

For this itinerary, complete the square reservation separately. Older guidance about using nearby-museum bookings should not be treated as a current entry guarantee. A square reservation does not buy palace admission, and visiting the square does not include climbing Tiananmen Rostrum.

The municipal English page lists the 天安门广场预约参观 WeChat mini-program and Jingtong among the channels. If the interface prevents you from completing the booking, ask your hotel to help with the official channel and verify the resulting confirmation. Assistance is not a confirmed reservation until you have the record.

Skip the square if its slot does not fit comfortably before the palace. The Palace Museum's visitor directions also describe approaches to Meridian Gate along the east or west moat roads; follow current signs and staff instructions rather than assuming every route is open.

Day 1: Forbidden City, Jingshan, and an Optional Lakeside Walk

Make the palace the day's anchor. Our suggested allowance is half a day, longer if you want detailed galleries or frequent rests. This is a pacing recommendation, not a minimum admission period.

The museum's visitor route runs south to north. Follow the main courtyards and choose side rooms by interest rather than trying to enter everything. The Treasure Gallery and Gallery of Clocks have separate tickets, currently ¥10 each; they are optional additions to general admission.

The current published main admission is ¥60 from April through October and ¥40 from November through March. Check the live calendar and notices before paying. Temporary restoration can close individual spaces even when the museum is open.

Exit at Shenwumen / 神武门 if you want to continue to Jingshan, which faces that exit across the road. Jingshan is a separate park visit. The viewpoint involves an uphill walk; skip the climb if stairs or another stretch on your feet would make the afternoon unpleasant.

After lunch, decide whether you have energy for Shichahai / 什刹海. This should be a short optional walk, not another checklist. Beijing Daily's recent Baimi Xiejie report describes a lane beside Qianhai where older residences and newer shops coexist. Choose a small area to explore, respect residential entrances, and leave private courtyards alone.

If the palace takes most of your day, stop after Jingshan. There is no need to cross south to Temple of Heaven and then travel north again for the evening.

Day 2: Temple of Heaven and Qianmen

Start with Temple of Heaven / 天坛 on a day when its main monuments are open. Use Tiantandongmen / 天坛东门 on Metro Line 5 for the east side, or Tianqiao / 天桥 on Line 8 for the west side. Pick your entrance before asking a driver to navigate to the whole park.

Our suggested allowance is two to three hours, including the walk between the main monuments. If your priority is the famous Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, buy the correct ticket: the official March 2026 FAQ confirms that the combined ticket covers park admission plus the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Echo Wall, and Circular Mound Altar. A basic park ticket is a different product.

The main monument areas currently open at 08:00 and normally close on Mondays except public holidays. An early park walk therefore does not mean the ticketed monuments are already accessible. Check the day's monument schedule rather than using the outer park's hours.

Afterward, transfer toward Qianmen / 前门 for lunch and a shorter afternoon. The tourism bureau pairs these places in one of its published visitor routes; our recommendation is simply to keep this day south of the palace rather than add the distant Summer Palace.

Use the afternoon for a meal and a street walk, with time to return to the hotel. Choose a restaurant by its menu, current opening status, and queue. A long wait for a famous duck restaurant should remain optional, not consume the only flexible part of the day.

Day 3: Summer Palace Without a Cross-City Checklist

The Summer Palace / 颐和园 is a garden-and-lake visit in northwest Beijing. Give it its own half-day or longer, with the transfer and lunch outside that sightseeing allowance.

Two useful starting choices are Xiyuan / 西苑 on Line 4 for East Palace Gate, and Beigongmen / 北宫门 on Line 4 for North Palace Gate. Decide the entrance and intended exit before setting out; a generic attraction pin can put you on the wrong side of a large site.

For a first visit, choose a section around Kunming Lake and the Long Corridor instead of committing to a complete lake circuit. Take a break before deciding whether to add hillside sights. This is deliberately a selective visit.

General admission and the combined ticket cover different areas. The municipal guide lists standard adult entry at ¥30 in April–October and ¥20 in November–March, with the combined ticket at ¥60 and ¥50 respectively. Compare the named included sights with what is open and what you actually want to visit.

Several inner attractions, including the Summer Palace Museum, normally close on Mondays except holidays. The garden being open does not make a Monday equivalent to a full interiors day. Do not build the route around a boat crossing: check any boat's operation and return arrangements on the day.

Monday, Sold-Out Tickets, and Rain

The Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven include substantial outdoor walking; neither is an all-indoor rain backup. If you want a museum alternative, check that specific museum's opening day and admission requirements before setting off. Do not assume a popular museum will admit you immediately because the weather changed.

For travelers who need fewer stairs or shorter walks, remove Jingshan's climb and use smaller sections of the gardens. Ask each venue about accessible routes before booking; this itinerary is not an accessibility audit.

Add the Great Wall, or Decide What to Drop

With only three full days, our default tradeoff is palace day + Temple of Heaven day + Wall day, dropping the Summer Palace. Travelers more interested in gardens than monuments could instead keep the Summer Palace and drop Day 2. Choose one compromise explicitly.

Keep the return evening flexible and avoid placing an intercity departure immediately after the excursion. A plan that depends on everything running at its fastest has little room for queues, traffic, or a slower walking pace.

Before Each Day

Check the attraction's current notice, your booking date and entry period, the exact entrance name, and the weather. Keep passports, confirmations, a charged phone, and the hotel's address accessible. Use live navigation for the journey instead of assuming the previous day's travel time will repeat.
