Days 1–3 — Chengdu

Underestimating Chongqing's terrain

Chongqing is not a walk-in-a-grid city — it is stacked vertically, and "500 meters away" on the map can mean several flights of stairs or a different elevation entirely. Build in extra time, use the metro and cableway liberally, and don't over-pack the days.

Traveling in July–August

The heat is the single biggest avoidable mistake. If summer is your only option, plan indoor and evening activities, hydrate hard, and consider swapping in cooler nearby options like the mountains or Yunnan.

Not reserving the panda base — or arriving midday

Entry requires an advance online real-name reservation, and midday is the worst time (hot, crowded, and the pandas are napping). Book ahead and arrive at opening.

Mixing up the stations
